Charge and its properties

What is charge

  • No body knows, what is charge, only we know the properties of charge and what charge can do?

Type of charge

  • There are two types of charge, positive and negative.
  • Positive charge due to proton and negative charge due to electrons.
  • There is no third charge in universe.

    • Quanisation of charge

  • Charge is always found to be in packets, not continuous.
  • Charge given to a body is always an integral multiple of a smallest unit of charge and this smallest unit of charge is equal to the charge of electron (e = 1.6*10-19C).
  • q = ne,                  here n = 0, 1, 2, ...

    Conservation of charge

  • The charge can neither be created, nor be destroyed, it can only be transferred from one part of the system to another part.
  • The total charge of an isolated system is always constant.
  • Σqi = constant,           here qi = charge of ith particle

    Properties of charge

  • Electrostatic charge is source of electric field.
  • It is scalar quantity.
  • Charges are of two types; positive and negative.
  • Like charges repel each other, whereas unlike attracts.
  • Charge is quantized.
  • Charge is always conserved.
